The extent of water damage is often enormous. Fortunately, you can save a lot of misery if you practice few precautions. Below are some ways on how you can prevent water from damaging your properties:
Preventing infiltration of rainwater:
- • Never leave a window open when you leave your home especially if there is a big chance of raining later.
- • Make sure your walls are in good condition, repair cracks through which rain can enter;
- • Regularly check the condition of your roof after a storm;
- • Check for water seepage in your roof;
- • Check your gutters if they are still in good condition. You need to make sure that the gutters are still effective in draining rain water;
- • Clean your gutters regularly especially if dead leaves have accumulated on it already.
- Prevention of damage caused by freezing weather:
- • Install central heating in rooms that are not occupied during winter to prevent freezing of pipes.
- • Make sure that your paraffin oil pipelines are well-heated to prevent shut down due to freezing which may cause more problems in the end.
- • Perform a thorough check on your pipes once it starts to thaw.
- Overall:
- • Check the condition when you observe water leaks quickly. A leaky pipeline can accumulate 4 liters or 700 liters of water per hour after one week!
- • Check the color of the water coming out from your tap. If it is yellowish or brownish, then something is wrong with your plumbing system. In most cases, this signifies that your pipes are rusty;
- • Surround your baths and showers with a water tight seal to prevent water from seeping in the tiles;
- • Beware of damp spots on walls and ceilings that could indicate a leak in walled pipes;
- • Preferably choose washing machines and dishwashers equipped with an anti-overflow system and do not put them in when you are away. Regularly check the filters if they are clogged or not;
- • Make it a habit to close your main water pipe for several days when you are away.
These are the 18 important tips to prevent our homes from water damage. Always remember that prevention is better than cure.
