Today we take a tour of one of the most controversial aspects of modern fashion. During the trip we visited one of the artists in this kind of fashion in Spain.
We talked about...
Body modification, which is the action of modifying the body permanently or semi-permanently, through deliberate methods. These modifications are done not for medical reasons.
What are those reasons? Well, there are diverse: for sexual reasons (change of sex, for example), aesthetic reasons, shows of loyalty, cultural reasons (are you familiar with the famous tribe that stretched their necks with rings?) Or expression, among others.
Among these, known as body art, modifications of any body part are done for aesthetic reasons.
This trend is not without controversy, and that artificially modifying the body to enhance the natural beauty is not something that is very well regarded in our society. In fact, extreme modifications or disfigurement of the body are regarded as mental disorders.
"Disfigurement" (a subjective term) and "mutilation" (the objective is seen as such when a body part loses its functionality or is severely reduced or permanently loses its functionality) are terms often used by critics of this trend, especially for non-consensual (think of religions, not at all Gothic).
Finally we come to the Gothic theme hands Jhon Martinez shows us part of their job so we can take a look:
Scarification is a term that comes from the word "scar" and is also known by the term healing (for its French counterpart), in the words other words, this is to develop a tattoo or another brand of tattoo with poor healing of wound.
The most famous historical use of this practice in humans was the mark of slaves with a hot iron brand, be assured that today's red-hot iron is not used.
You must know that the scarification is not a very precise art, the reason is that it is your body that creates the scar and not the artist and everybody tends to heal differently, what works for one does not have the same effect on another person. But in any case and generally, it must be said that the scars tend to widen during the healing process so that the fine details usually do not remain once the scars heal but tend to mix with the rest of the drawing.
